So, read it, absorb its urgent message — and try not to think about all the trees that probably went into those 713 pages.

Proulx is particularly effective in conveying the effect of one generation on the next.

With Barkskins it seems that Proulx cast the net too wide, overlooking what can be captured only by going deeper, bringing up to the surface the attributes of storytelling that excite and move us.
