An extraordinary and sometimes appalling submersion in nostalgie de la boue and French social problems, which takes on an added gravity in the wake of recent tragic events.

If Sante’s book sometimes overwhelms with encyclopedic density, its great virtue is to send the reader down investigative paths of his own.

“The Other Paris” shouldn’t discourage anyone from visiting the city. As a guidebook to a territory of ghosts and an homage to the writers who preserved their memories, it may even encourage tourism of the vanished sites.
