“World Gone By” is, of necessity, the most elegiac of the three. But it’s also suspenseful, devious, well-constructed and as filled with ethical questions as it is with gangsters.

As its title implies, “World Gone By” is a melancholy novel, presented in a minor key.

On one level, a very moving meditation on fathers and sons; on another, an illumination of character and fate.
