This novel is never less than absorbing and her extensive research is seamlessly woven into tale.

Through imagining what it is like to be a bee, the novel ends up reflecting on what a marvel it is to simply be – cutting to the heart of existence as it pits the perils of extinction against the fierce instinct to survive.

Paull’s prose envelops the senses just as the sounds and smells of the hive hypnotise the bees, drenching her readers with nectar and honey, then switching the pace to depict frenetic, spiralling flights.
