By the end, I felt Simmons had led me on an epic journey, and I was grateful for it.

The Abominable is a frustrating novel for its multiple misdirections and contradictions, and the dense nature of what is ultimately a thriller novel undermines much of the potential tension inherit in such a novel.

If anything, the book feels like a first or second draft: The structure of the story is there, but Simmons hasn’t been rigorous enough in editing his style to turn The Abominable into a polished work.
